Singing 2006-2008

I’ve just cut and pasted this page from the alisonboston.com archives on The Way Back Machine. It needs a little reformatting…

Alison’s Performances at Jam Sessions and Open Mics 2006-2008

When links are available for the musicians, the link is in ‘blue’. If the same musicians appear more than once, the link and details may appear only once. This page is still being formatted. Eventually there will be a list of links at the end of the page, until then, scroll through the list and look for the ‘blue’ names to link to musician’s homepages, etc.

March

March 26
The Vocal Jam, Tarantos improv Easier Said: José Alberto Medina en los teclados and melodica Matías Míguez de Argentina en el bajo eléctrico y Laia Fortià en bateria

March 23: Pop, Rock, Funky Jam, The Green Room (Top Floor, Maremagnum Shopping Complex, Barcelona) Tsunami and Raunchy Blues Improv with Guitar:Martin (Argentina), Backing Vocals and Keyboards:Wally VonHaus (Argentina), Drums: Italo Melis (Chile) This jam was insane! The audience was really rowdy and we could hardly hear ourselves playing and singing! When I was singing the blues number a very drunk girl jumped on stage in front of me and started stripping! She told me afterwards that she had done that because: “your singing has so….so….much….feeling.” All my life, since I was a child, I’ve been told that I have a sexy voice. I never thought it would provoke a girl to start stripping! Of course, I just sang the way those virile young musicians played!

March 20
Barcelona Blues Society Sala MonasterioCharlie Guitar: Jose (BCN), Guitar: Josep Torello (BCN), Bass: Raul (BCN), Drums: Gaston (Chile), Piano: ?????? (he stepped up to the piano from the audience, twice that fellow has done that when I’m singing!)

March 19
The Vocal Jam, Tarantos improv Tsunami: José Alberto Medina en los teclados and melodica Matías Míguez de Argentina en el bajo eléctrico y Laia Fortiàen bateria.
This was an experiment. I had good feedback from the audience. It was the first time I’ve ever sung that song with musicians,. The melody I usually sing it with was non-existent, and on reflection, I think that’s good. Mattius said he really liked it, and there was a group of young German girls in the audience who were quite crazy for it! They all wanted to have their pictures taken with me afterwards! I like singing my own material with that house band at Tarantos vocal jam.

March 18
Blues Jam, Harlem Jazz Club. An improvised mis-mash with Chino (BCN) on guitar, Cobre on bass, and drums? that young fellow I used to see in Big Bang all the time.

March 5 :
The Vocal Jam, Tarantos improv Freedom of Religion: José Alberto Medina en los teclados, Matías Míguez de Argentina en el bajo eléctrico y Laia Fortiàen bateria.
(It was a very cool jam, as was the last Vocal Jam I went to. This was Laia’s first time as the house drummer! She’s good. I like what happened. I asked for an anguished minimalist sound. My first time singing that song that way. It worked very well. That’s a great event. The musicians are very accomplished and creative. )
March 2: Jazz Fusion Jam, The Green Room (Top Floor, Maremagnum Shopping Complex, Barcelona) Free Jazz Vocal Impov with Guitar: Nicholas(Argentina), Bass: Alex (Argentina), Keyboard: Wally (Argentina), and Drums: Itolo (Chile), then a blues improv that morphed into reggae with Martin (Argentina) on Guitar, and a Reggae improv with Leandro (Aregntina) on Guitar. (This was a great jam! I was able to really explore vocal percussion in the free jazz number and got a great response from the musicians; they applauded me when we finsihed the song! That’s the first time that’s ever happend. I was stunned and pleased! It was also my first time really singing reggae – Leandro pushed me to do that. Thanks fella!)

(It was a very cool jam, as was the last WTF Vocal Jam I went to. I like what happens there. I feel a lot of creative freedom and the musicians tell me they have have fun jamming with me. I just give them the first few lines of one of my songs and they take it from there. They are good improvisers, and it’s a vocal jam so the focus is on the singer. Last night, Raul joined us with his guitar after we had begun. It opened things up a bit.)

Tribute to Ani as Guest Performer with Ari Up and Dubblestandart at the Victoria International Folk Festival, Victoria, B.C. Canada

I have a long history of being terrified of singing in public but the urge to sing eventually overcame my fear and while living in Budapest I started to make musical vocalizations in jam sessions in my apartment. In addition to the Speaking Music performances with the jazz trio where I spoke my poems to musical accompaniment and sang a cappella. I sang at one public rock and blues jam session while I lived there and recorded one spoken word track (Technotoys Blues) with the Hungarian band Anima Sound System (that song also on Mole Records Listening Pearls). When I went back to Victoria, Canada in April, 2006 I did a series of voice workshops at Open Space and participated regularly at the drum circles in Beacon Hill Park where I played finger cymbals and vocals. In September 2006 I went to Barcelona and started singing in the street with musicians. Then I started to sing my own poetry and lyrics at public jam sessions.
